The Problem

While working with Costco's marketing department, I was responsible for finding local events and potential partners that Costco could collaborate with to increase membership sign-ups.

This meant researching sports tournaments, community gatherings, family events and local organisations to identify opportunities worth pursuing.

The process was time-consuming. Information was scattered across websites, social media and event calendars.

And finding an event was only the beginning. Someone still needed to identify the organiser, find their contact details, reach out, arrange a collaboration and eventually understand whether the event generated new memberships.

I realised that much of this process could be made significantly more efficient.

The Opportunity

I saw an opportunity to turn a repetitive marketing task into a more automated, measurable workflow.

What if every Costco warehouse could receive a shortlist of relevant local partnership opportunities every Monday?

Instead of spending hours searching for events, the person responsible could focus on contacting organisers and securing worthwhile collaborations.

And by recording how many memberships each event generated, the system could eventually learn which opportunities delivered the strongest results.

The goal was to save time, improve outreach and make community marketing more effective.

Validation

How the idea evolved.

  1. Experiencing the Problem

Working with Costco's marketing department gave me firsthand experience of sourcing local events and potential collaboration partners.

  2. Identifying Repetitive Work

I recognised how much time was spent researching events, evaluating their relevance and searching for organiser contact information.

  3. Designing for Multiple Warehouses

I designed the system around individual Costco warehouse locations, each with a configurable search radius in kilometres.

  4. Developing the Workflow

I built a tool to discover potential partners, prioritise relevant events and support outreach with contact information and draft emails.

  5. Presenting the Concept

I demonstrated the concept to Costco management and received encouraging feedback, including interest in seeing further evidence of its practical value.

The Solution

Great Mondays is a marketing intelligence and partnership discovery tool designed to help Costco warehouses identify and pursue local collaboration opportunities.

Each warehouse can be configured with its own location and search radius. Every Monday, the system is designed to generate a shortlist of upcoming events and potential partners within that area.

Rather than presenting an overwhelming list, it prioritises opportunities using factors such as location, event type, audience and potential relevance.

For each opportunity, the tool is designed to provide the event name, date and location; distance from the selected warehouse; event category and audience; organiser information and available contact details; a relevance score and explanation; a suggested outreach email; partnership tracking; and membership sign-up results.

This creates a workflow from discovering an opportunity to evaluating its eventual marketing performance.

Decisions

Why I Built It This Way

Automate Research, Not Relationships

Why

I wanted to remove repetitive research so employees could spend more time building relationships with organisers and securing partnerships. The software should support the human side of marketing, not replace it.

Trade-off

Staff still need to review opportunities, contact organisers and negotiate collaborations.

Design Around Individual Warehouses

Why

An event that's relevant to one Costco warehouse may be completely irrelevant to another. Allowing each location to define its own search radius makes recommendations more locally relevant.

Trade-off

Different warehouse locations may have different event availability and community characteristics.

Make Outreach Easier

Why

Finding an event is only useful if someone can act on it. Providing organiser contact information and drafting outreach emails reduces the work required to turn a discovery into a potential partnership.

Trade-off

Contact details may be unavailable or outdated, and AI-generated emails need human review before sending.

Measure Membership Sign-ups

Why

I wanted the tool to go beyond finding events and help the business understand which partnerships actually delivered results. Recording sign-ups from each event could reveal patterns and help improve future recommendations.

Trade-off

Reliable performance analysis requires accurate attribution of membership sign-ups to individual events.

Build a Repeatable Weekly Workflow

Why

Rather than expecting employees to remember to research opportunities, I designed Great Mondays around a consistent weekly discovery process. Every Monday, relevant opportunities could be brought directly to the people responsible.

Trade-off

Recommendations depend on the quality and freshness of publicly available event information.

Lessons Learned

The best opportunities can come from your own work
Experiencing the marketing workflow firsthand helped me recognise a problem worth solving.
Automation should free people to do higher-value work
The goal wasn't simply to collect event information faster. It was to give employees more time to secure meaningful partnerships.
Measuring outcomes matters
Discovering and attending events is only part of the story. Understanding which collaborations generate memberships is essential to improving future decisions.

Current Status

Prototype Developed
An initial tool has been developed around local event discovery, warehouse-specific searches and opportunity evaluation.
Management Feedback
I presented the concept to Costco management and received encouraging initial feedback.
Further Validation Required
The next step is to demonstrate the reliability of recommendations and evaluate the time-saving and membership acquisition potential.

Final Reflection

Great Mondays started with a problem I experienced directly while working with Costco's marketing department.

Finding events, researching organisers and identifying worthwhile partnerships required considerable manual effort.

I saw an opportunity to build something that could simplify that process for individual warehouses while making community marketing more measurable.

The ambition was never just to find more events.

It was to help employees spend less time searching, more time building partnerships and ultimately make better decisions about where Costco should invest its marketing efforts.
